The Mississippi Arts Commission has received $441,100 in federal coronavirus stimulus funds and says it will use the money to help art-related nonprofits.
The state Arts Commission said it's planning on giving emergency grants to organizations that were already receiving operating grants from it. The state agency said in a news release that was done "to provide economic relief as quickly as possible and focus assistance on independent arts organizations with staff."
Grants will be between $1,500 and $11,100.
The money is coming from the CARES Act, which allotted the National Endowment for the Arts about $30 million to be distributed to the states.
“We are incredibly grateful to Congress, the President, and the NEA for this much-needed recovery funding and understand that time is of the essence in distributing these funds,” Malcolm White, executive director of state Arts Commission, said in a statement. “Like much of the economy, the arts sector in Mississippi and the nation have faced significant challenges as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Closing facilities and canceling events equates to lost revenue. We are thankful that the federal government has recognized this need and has responded.”
