As the coronavirus pandemic continues it spread, Mississippi has reopened. Gov. Tate Reeves announced last week there would be no more closures across the state.
During May the state averaged 280 new cases each day. The first case in the state was confirmed on March 11. At press time on Tuesday, the total number of confirmed cases statewide was 16,020.
In Marion County at press time Tuesday, there have been 115 confirmed cases. Over the weekend, a new case was added from a long-term health care center. There was some fluctuation in the numbers over the weekend due to cases actually belonging to other counties.
Under the safe return order, all businesses are allow to open. However, Reeves urged everyone to maintain the safety guidelines set out by the CDC including social distancing and wearing a mask in public.
Reeves said people also need to use common sense and take personal responsibility in going out and about.
Reeves also is changing the guidelines with social distancing for gatherings:
• Where social distancing is possible, gatherings inside can be up to 50 people and outside up to 100 people;
• Where social distancing is not possible, gatherings inside should be no more than 20 people and no more than 50 people outside.
Reeves added Wayne County to the list of counties that have stricter guidelines than the rest of the state due to the rapid influx of cases Friday. Counties under stricter guidelines include Attala, Holmes, Lauderdale, Newton, Neshoba, Scott, Jasper, Leake and now Wayne.
