An East Marion High School student who took a school trip to Washington, D.C. and New York with classmates spoke about the experience with members of the Marion County School District Board of Education.
At its Oct. 9 meeting, Austin Hibley addressed the Board and spoke about the trip that took place earlier this year.
“They had a fantastic time and I think they learned a lot,” Superintendent Wendy Bracey said as she introduced Hibley. “I hope that this is something that we can continue in Marion County. I got plenty of pictures through texts and I think I enjoyed their trip as much as they did through Facebook posts.”
“From the Empire State Building, the view was amazing,” Hibley said. “You get in one elevator and go up and then you have to go up to another elevator because the first one won’t take you all the way to the top. We went up to the top and view was just amazing. Everything looks so small from the top of the Empire State Building.”
There were many other highlights of the trip for Hibley and his fellow students.
“We actually got to view the 9/11 Memorial,” he said. “The atmosphere is so different than in the classroom. In the classroom, you watch videos, when you’re there, you can feel the emotion. It’s a great way to learn history.”
A total of 16 EMHS students were a part of the trip this year.
In other business, the Board:
• Approved 15 fundraisers for various groups and athletic teams.
• Approved other miscellaneous consent agenda items, including the 2017-18 test security plan and other strategic plans.
• Approved several field trips.
• Reviewed monthly enrollment data, student attendance and the drop-out report.
• Approved revised winter athletic schedules.
• Approved various personnel moves including the resignations of Allison Domine, West Marion Primary Secretery; Dawn Solomon, WMP teacher assistant; Patricia Braddock, AEST instructor, Bridgett Bennett, East Marion High School janitor; and India Watts, Save the Children representative. The Board then hired Donald Dauphin as a District school bus driver and Kim McElroy as a teacher as East Marion Elementary School.
The Board also discussed and approved several 16th Section Land leases.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Marion County School District Board of Education is set for 6 p.m. on Nov. 13 at the Board offices on Mississippi 13 North.
