A Washington Parish, La., man known for his love of racing died Saturday in what police are describing as a self-defense shooting at the hands of his son.
Hoyt “Chick” Boyd, 81, of Angie, La., was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting in northeast Washington Parish. Deputies and detectives from the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident, according to Sheriff Randy “Country” Seal.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting was in self-defense,” Seal said in a news release. “No arrest was made and the matter will be referred to the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.”
Local race fans said Boyd was a well-known racer in the region during the 1970s and 1980s and even raced in Foxworth when the race track existed there. Family members took to Facebook to thank the many people who have contacted them over the past few days.
“Our family appreciates all of your heartfelt expressions of sympathy,” Boyd’s daughter, Cathy Pierce wrote. “Daddy’s life was blessed by family and friends like you.”
Funeral arrangements for Boyd were incomplete as of deadline .
“In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Angie Baptist Church or Mile Branch Settlement at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds,” Pierce wrote.
Seal said the shooting has shaken the community.
“This is a tragic event which strongly impacts not only his family but also the entire close-knit Angie community,” he concluded. “I extend my sincere sympathy to all who are touched by this event and offer my prayers to the Boyd family.”
