A wintry mix of weather is bearing down on Marion County with snowfall expected to begin at 3 a.m. Friday and continue until 10 a.m.
The Marion County and Columbia school districts have both cancelled school for Friday.
The National Weather Service in Jackson issued a winter storm warning this afternoon that will be in effect from 9 p.m. until noon Friday.
“Plan on difficult travel conditions including the morning commute,” the advisory states. “Total accumulations of two inches with higher amounts in some areas are expected.”
Marion County Emergency Management Director Aaron Greer said his office is monitoring the situation closely.
“We’re expecting the wintry mix to come in between 9 p.m. and midnight,” he said. “At around 3 a.m., we expect it to begin snowing. It could snow from then until 10 a.m. with some snow heavy in localized areas.”
Greer said he was in contact with area school officials.
“We’re looking and one to two inches of snow,” Greer said. “Whether it will actually accumulate, we don’t know. We’ll be monitoring the situation throughout the night.”
