Dot Fortenberry of Columbia earned a bronze medal Saturday while competing in table tennis at the Mississippi State Games at Northeast Jones High School in Laurel.
The 82-year-old was in the women’s bracket — no age groups — where the next youngest competitor was half her age.
Fortenberry has been playing table tennis since fourth grade and is a past State Games champion, although she said she had not played in two years prior to Saturday. As a top three finisher, she earns an invite to the State Games of America July 31 to Aug. 4 in Lynchburg, Va., although she says such a trip isn’t on her agenda.
Fortenberry suggested others consider competing in the State Games, which continues through June 22 and includes about 40 different sports that amateurs compete in.
