Jackson, Miss. – The Marion County Forestry Association (CFA) recently received the 2025 Outstanding CFA Small Chapter Award at Mississippi Forestry Association’s (MFA) Annual Meeting.
The Marion CFA has 74 members, with leadership provided by a Board of Directors that met 11 times during the past year. Topics for Marion CFA’s field day this year included longleaf pine management, invasive species control including herbicides and alternative options, and timber markets for forest products. This event was held on the property of the CFA’s Tree Farmer of the Year award winner.
The Marion CFA annual membership meeting featured an update of the plant biodiversity findings in Marion County from actual field survey data collected in Marion County by researchers from the University of Southern Mississippi.
The CFA was very involved in the community this year, staffing a forestry station at an environmental field day conducted by the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Marion County Soil and Water Conservation for all third graders in Marion County and assisting with the delivery of the South Teachers Conservation Workshop. The Marion CFA was also active in policy issues during the past year, sending a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers highlighting their concerns regarding Pearl River flood risk management alternatives and continuing to advocate for Mississippi Forestry Commission needs for competitive pay and increased staffing.
