Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church celebrated their first church anniversary on Sunday, September 1. The church celebrated 136 years of service and worship in the Sandy Hook community. While Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church has stood strong for 136 years, it continues to be an important pillar of the community. The church campus contains a plethora of history, along with the remaining foundation of the Historic Friendship School which burned years ago.
Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1888 under the leadership of Rev. Gable Duke as Pastor. The church has had seven pastors since, namely Rev. Gabe Duke who served for thirty-five years, and Rev. Augustus Brown who served sixteen years. Leadership also was given to others by the names of Rev. Eathon Henry, Rev. O. D. Alford, Rev. Weary, and Rev. James Wells. Rev. James Wells served as pastor for over 40 years. On May 30, 2016, Pastor Jessie Bridges assumed the role of Pastor of Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He is currently still serving as Pastor.
Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church gifted its senior members with certificates of appreciation to thank them for their contiuned support and sacrifices for the church.
Pastor Jessie Bridges stated during the special occasion that it is our hope to inspire our present and future congregations during this time. It is also his prayer that we will protect the ideas and dreams of those who labored so long enduring many hardships while working in our Lord’s Vineyard. God has been our shield and strength. He has guided us with his counsel; blessed us by his providence and inspired by his spirit. Let us continue to do our Lord’s work, renew our commitment to him, and revive our hearts for the Word of God.
Pastor Bridges along with the church gave recognition and honored each Senior Citizens of the church with a certificate of appreciation to thank them for their sacrifices and services that they have given and currently rendering to the church. The special guest for this occasion was Rev. C. E. Maston and The Friendship M. B. Church of Gulfport, Ms.
