West Marion's show choir "New Era" traveled to Laurel on Saturday to compete in the West Jones Show Choir Invitational at West Jones High School, capping off the day with first place in small-mixed division along with taking home best vocals, best choreography and best show design.
With three more competitions to go this season, the group's goal is to keep finding ways to improve and be the best version of themselves that they can be.
Dalton Nolan, who is in his third year with the ensemble, reflected on past competitions but anticipates more growth to finish out the year.
"It's been a very productive season. We've all improved through these last four shows, and I can't wait to see how we progress through our last three shows," Nolan said.
Junior Emileigh Pounds, who is a first-year member of New Era, said she didn't expect show choir to have such an impact on her.
"I didn't think I would fall in love with show choir as much as I did. I have learned throughout the season how much hard work and dedication it takes to get to where we are,” she explained. “We push each other and ourselves to get better every day. I truly wish I didn't wait until my junior year to start this program, but I am so grateful for this opportunity I have now."
New Era will compete in two local settings the next two weekends before traveling to Biloxi in March. This Saturday, New Era travels to Petal High School and will travel to Oak Grove High School on Feb. 28 before its final competition.
"The most important competition is the next one. We still have a lot of work to do and a lot of season left,” Director Jon Bullock said.
