Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Hathorn Funeral Home for Dr. J. Roy McComb, 84, of Columbia, who passed away on Thursday, June 20. Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, in Spring Valley Cemetery in Mathiston. Dr. Gene Henderson and Bro. Don Lum officiated at the services. Bo Parker provided special music. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of the services on Tuesday, June 25, at Hathorn Funeral Home.
He was a longtime resident of Marion County serving his community in two outstanding roles. He devoted his life to ministry serving as the Pastor for First Baptist Church of Columbia for 16 years. He loved to travel both domestic and foreign. He went on numerous missionary trips spreading the gospel. He was also employed by First Southern Bank for 10 years, serving as CEO for five years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. Some of his hobbies included hunting, playing sports and supporting Mississippi State University.
His faith in Christ was paramount in his life and the heartbeat of all he was, all he did and all he accomplished. The lives he touched are too numerous to mention, but his legacy will continually live in all the people who were affected by his selfless giving, his character and his love for Christ.
He was preceded in death by his father, William O. McComb; mother, Willie R. McComb; and one sister, Dee Newingham.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Donna McComb of Columbia; two sons, Donovan McComb (Joy) and David McComb; one daughter, Cynthia Davis (Kevin); three brothers, Dwight McComb Sr. (Sally), Carles McComb (Cathy) and Mark McComb (Linda); three grandchildren, Nicole Greer (Deryk), Taylor Merritt (David) and Grayson McComb; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Daulton Turnage, Riley Turnage, Elijah Nibert, Todd Gurley, Thomas Gurley, Will McComb, Dwight McComb Jr., Grayson McComb and Lance Thornhill.
