Julia “Judy” Merle Thornton

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at Colonial Funeral Home for Julia “Judy” Merle Thornton, 90, of Columbia, who passed from this life into God’s presence on Friday, Sept. 13. Burial followed in Beech Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Tullos, La. Rev. Brian Stewart officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of the services on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Colonial Funeral Home.
She was born in Winn Parish, La., to Ed and Anna Dearmon and has lived in Columbia since 1970. She worked in healthcare as a licensed practical nurse. She was a woman of faith and served her Lord and her community through her longtime membership with North Columbia Baptist Church. She loved her Savior, loved her family and loved her friends. She just loved people and will be remembered for the many acts of kindness that she gave to countless others.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby R. Thornton; parents, Ed and Anna Dearmon; two sisters, Annie Woodward and Deane Chandler; six brothers, Jewel Dearmon, Doris Dearmon, Lawrence Dearmon, Leon Dearmon, Eddie Dearmon and Claude Dearmon; nephew, Brent Dearmon; and special friend, Grace Sullivan.
Survivors include her two sons, Rob Thornton and Jon Thornton (Jamie); three grandchildren, Micah Thornton, Noah Thornton and Claire Thornton; five step-grandchildren, Peyton Ford, Merrick Ford, Hayden Ford, Addyson Walters and Austyn Walters; two sisters-in-law, Pat Dearmon and Carolyn Thornton; and a brother-in-law, Buddy Thornton (Diane).
Pallbearers were Shane Coleman, Brian Oglesbee, Eugene Champagne, Austin Buckley, Mike Williamson, Mark Passmore and Danny Sullivan.
