Marguerite Greer Burton
94, Columbia
Funeral services were held at noon on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Hathorn Funeral Home for Marguerite Greer Burton, 94, of Columbia, who passed away on Wednesday, May 24. Burial followed in Randall Cemetery on New Union Road. Rev. Johnny Williams officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of the services on Wednesday May 31, at Hathorn Funeral Home.
Born in 1928, she was the eldest of eight children raised on the family farm located on New Union Road. With the strong work ethic inspired by her parents, she completed high school at Bunker Hill and went on to attend Pearl River Junior College. She began her working career with General Electric in Jackson.
In 1947, she relocated to Washington, D.C., working for the federal government where she met the love of life, Ronald H. Burton, who was on active duty in the U.S. Army. After a whirlwind courtship, marriage quickly followed. For the next 24 years, she was a dedicated Army wife traveling with her husband from New York, two tours in Texas, three tours in Oklahoma and two tours in Germany while raising four “horrible” children. Following his retirement in 1972, her desire to move back to Marion County to be reunited with her family and friends prompted her return to the place she had always known as home. She even dragged along that New York Yankee she had married.
For the next 50 years, she lived an exceptional life in the one place she wanted to be. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and farming to her heart’s content while spoiling her six grandchildren, giving in to everything they wanted. From her grateful children, we could not have been blessed with a more dedicated and caring mother in all the world. We love you, and you are already missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald H. Burton; parents, Roxie and Cicero Greer; one son, Russell Burton; two sisters, Bobbie Haddox and Robbie “Bud” Donahue; one brother, Jerald Greer; one son-in-law, Feryl Chapman; and two daughters-in-law, Beth Greer and Lizzie Greer.
Survivors include her three children, Stephenny A. Chapman, Michael Burton (Juliet) and Ronnie S. Graham (Patrick); two brothers, J.V. Greer and Tommy Greer; two sisters, Blanche Evanson (James L.) and Sarah Broome (James); one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Burton; six grandsons, Chris Burton, Joseph “Joey” Burton, Justin Graham (Cristy), Jeffery Graham, Alex Chapman (Katherine) and Nicholas Troy Chapman (Randi); two granddaughters, April Stampley (David) and Ashley Thompson; three great-grandchildren, Madison Graham, Jace Graham, Elliot Chapman, Brody Stampley, Tyler Armstrong, Gavin Armstrong, Phoenix Boone and Kinsley Boone.
Pallbearers were Chris Burton, Joseph “Joey” Burton, Justin Graham, Jeffery Graham, Alex Chapman and Nicholas Troy Chapman.
