Dr. Mark Allen Stevens

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. by the family on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church for Dr. Mark Allen Stevens, 66, of Columbia, who passed away on Wednesday, June 13 after a long battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Born in Jackson on Oct. 12, 1951, Mark attended Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. For six years, he faithfully served our nation in the United States Army Medical Corps. He completed a family practice internship and residency while stationed at Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Wash. He then spent three years stationed at Fort Polk in DeRidder, La. His wife, Dr. Martha Stevens, served alongside him in the Army Medical Corp as a physician. He returned to Columbia with his wife and children, where he worked in local emergency rooms for several years. Dr. Stevens then opened his office in Family Practice Medicine but continued part-time emergency room work. His last years of work were spent as a family practice physician with Hattiesburg Clinic in Columbia’s Family Clinic and in Marion General Hospital’s emergency room.
He had a marked devotion to Anglican liturgy and classical church music. He served at the altar 56 years. He was an active member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of Columbia where he served as lay reader, a member of the Mission Committee, Senior Warden and a delegate to the Diocesan Council.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tolbert Gordon and Bettie Lou James Stevens.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Martha Louise Stevens of Columbia; two daughters, Belinda Jeanette Stevens Bell (Josh) of Hattiesburg and Anna Katherine Stevens Swann (Grady) of Columbia; three sisters, Marcia Elizabeth Mixon (John) and Melinda “Lindy” Ann Clement, both of Jackson, and Myra Louise Myrick (Lewis) of Hattiesburg; two grandchildren, Grady "Gray" Steven Swann and Sadie Amelia Swann, both of Columbia, and an abundance of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
