Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2018, in Woodlawn Cemetery for Gordon Broom, 89, of Brandon, who died on May 11, following an extended illness. Bro. George Moore officiated at the services. Visitation was held from noon until the time of the services on Monday, May 14, at Hathorn Funeral Home.
He was born in Columbia on April 9, 1929. He graduated from Improve School after which he served two years in the United States Air Force. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi, Jackson School of Law and Mississippi College School of Law.
He retired from the Internal Revenue Service as Chief of Audit, Eastern Division of Tennessee, after 30 years of service and then practiced law for the next 30 years with Dossett, Goode, Barnes & Broom, the Barnes Law Firm and McLeod & Associates. He was a member of the Mississippi Bar Association and the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Clark Creek Hunting Club in Union Church for 30 years. A former long-time member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Jackson, at the time of his death, he was a member of Flowood Baptist Church in Flowood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Calvin and Bertha Herrin Broom; a daughter, Janet Marie Broom; four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Moncile Stringer Broom of Brandon; a daughter, Gwen B. Allen of Brandon; two sons, Lance G. Broom (Patty) of Pineville and Brian A. Broom (Karee) of Crystal Springs; a sister, Celeste Hinds of Fairhope; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
