Glyn Belton Porter
100, Columbia
A private family graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2020, at Hathorn Funeral Home for Glyn Belton Porter, 100, of Columbia, who died on Wednesday, July 8. Burial followed in Cook Family Cemetery. Bro. Kenny Peavey officiated at the services.
He was born in Calhoun City and raised in Greenwood, where he played football for the Greenwood Bulldogs. After high school, he started work at Southern Bell Telephone Company. This career was interrupted by WWII when he served in the Navy. After his service, he returned to the telephone company where he worked for 37 years. Using his GI bill, he learned to fly, and he spent the next nearly 60 years of his life incorporating his love of fishing and hunting into his passion for flying. He was well known for flying fishermen to Chandelier Island in the Gulf of Mexico and he operated B Line Flying Services at Hawkins Field in Jackson for several years. Retiring from the telephone company in 1978, he had the opportunity to enjoy living on his family land in Columbia for over 40 years. He will be remembered for his energetic spirit. Into his 90s, he could be found working with his grandchildren or even parachuting out of planes. The stories of his feats are endless and legendary to his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Julia Porter; his parents, Walter and Everlena Porter; one son, Glyn B. Porter Jr., and one sister, Evelyn Tyler.
Survivors include his three daughters, Gail Landrum of Dallas, Texas, Gloria Parhan (George) of Clinton, and Lynn English (Edward) of Columbia; one son, Tom Porter (Renee) of Columbia; one daughter-in-law, Mary Kat Porter; 10 grandchildren, Scott Landrum (Brenda), Craig Landrum (Kristi), Russell Shaw (Kathy), Adam Porter (Paige), Dave Porter (Mary Lauren), Warren English (Ashley), Tucker English (Morgan), Julia Foxworth (Jonathan), Javan Porter (Natalie) and Jalyn Porter, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were his grandsons.
