Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020, in Woodlawn Cemetery for Oliver Quinn Whittington, 93, of Columbia, who died on Friday, Dec. 4. Bro. Millard Moak officiated at the services. Visitation was held from noon until the time of the services on Thursday, Dec. 10 in Woodlawn Cemetery.
He went home for Christmas. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and very active in the American Legion of Tylertown, serving as Commander. He had a full career as a supervisor offshore with Transocean. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia. He enjoyed working his small farm in Tylertown and caring for his cattle. He continued to keep busy and could be seen regularly at craft fairs selling items he had fabricated. He will be remembered for his strength and character as part of “The Greatest Generation.”
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Betty Whittington; father, Oliver Whittington Sr., and mother, Mae Whittington Lee.
Survivors include his one daughter, Ann Joly of Covington, La.; one son, Sam Q. Whittington of Littleton, Colo.; one brother, John H. Lee; one sister, Betty Marie Breeland; three granddaughters, Jessica Cook (Rodney), Tara Quave (Trey) and Bettsy Whittington MD; one grandson, Brad Whittington; four great-granddaughters, Paige, Rebecca, Whitney, Tessa, and one great-grandson, Elijah.
Pallbearers were Sam Q. Whittington, Brad Whittington, Trey Quave, Chris Turnage, Randy Dyess, Danny Culliver, Morris Sweat and Howard Thompson.
