Alton F. Bennett
Graveside services with military honors were held on Saturday, May 9, 2020, in Woodlawn Cemetery for Alton F. Bennett, 87, of Columbia, who died on Thursday, May 7 in Columbia. Bro. Millard Moak officiated at the services.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army, 2nd Armed Cavalry patrolling the Iron Curtain in Germany for two years in which he received an Occupation Medal. He then continued his service in the Mississippi Army National Guard, 150th Engineering Battalion in Columbia for five years.
He was a bottling superintendent at the Columbia Coca-Cola Bottling Company until it closed and then became a truck driver until his retirement.
He loved to stay busy by working in his yard, his workshop or by helping his family and friends. It was evident to all who knew him that his family was his pride and joy. He loved them dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bennett of the Hickory Grove community in Lamar County; son, Anthony F. Bennett; brothers, Oliver Bennett, Allen Bennett, Arthur Bennett and Ervin Bennett, and sisters, Sarah Broome, Mary Bennett, Lucille Broome and Lavada Buchanan.
Survivors include his daughter, Pam Ball of Columbia; granddaughter, Kimberly Ball of Columbia; great-grandson, Landon McNabb of Columbia; ex-wife and lifelong friend, Sonya Bennett of Columbia, and sister, Eva Lois of Branton.
Pallbearers were Landon McNabb, Fred McDaniel, Huey Hitt, Victor Johnson, Steve Crawley and Robert McDaniel.
Hathorn Funeral Home of Columbia was in charge of arrangements.
