Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, 2019, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia for Elizabeth Rita Shivers, 83, of Columbia, who died on Tuesday, Dec. 24 at her residence. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Father Tommy Conway officiated at the services. A Rosary service was held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26 at Hathorn Funeral Home. Visitation was held from 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hathorn Funeral Home.
As a native of Newfoundland, Canada, she moved to the United States in 1958. She was a secular Franciscan of the Catholic Church, where she lived to meet the needs of the less fortunate around her. She devoted her life to her faith and her family. She loved knitting, crocheting and baking. Her friends and family will always remember her works as a wonderful Christian mother and wife.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Ruth Maloney, and one sister, Veronica Hearn.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Reese Donald Shivers of Columbia; one son, Kenneth Shivers (Mary) of Humble, Texas; three daughters, Deborah Merritt, Rowena Massengale and Donna Shivers, all of Columbia; two sisters, Bernadette Maloney of Toronto, Canada and Carmel Dooley of St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada; one brother, Howard Maloney of Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, Canada; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
