Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2020, at The Church on Main for William Shelby Hamilton, 84, of Columbia, who passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020, at Merit Health. Interment was at Society Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Pastor Brian Stewart officiated at the services, and visitation was from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Shelby retired from the City of Columbia as a captain of the fire department in 1997, where he served faithfully for 28 years. After retirement, he spent his days on the farm and swinging on the front porch. He was a generous neighbor and saw to it that his neighbor friends never ran out of fresh eggs, fruits and vegetables. He spent every morning at The Deck eating breakfast and socializing. He loved watching NASCAR, wrestling and especially women's basketball. He loved his family, especially his wife of 63 years, and was lost after her death.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Hamilton; mother, Lena Hamilton; wife, Lula “Lucy” Hamilton; brother, Rulus Hamilton; sisters, Geneva Martin and Myrtis Leonard; brother-in-law B.G. Loftin; and sister-in-law, Peggy Loftin.
He is survived by one son, Terry Hamilton (Pamela), of Oak Vale; one daughter, Wanda Dawsey (Terry) of Foxworth; eight grandchildren, Amy McKenzie (Justin) of Columbia; Jolie Mullins (Steve) of Foxworth; Blace Hamilton of Oak Vale; Tyler Dawsey (Angelia) of Columbia; Carley Carter (Alex) of Columbia; Jacob Cook (Kristen) of Columbia; David Cook (Allison) of Columbia and Kristy Hopkins of Oak Vale; 19 great-grandchildren, Cole Bourne (Doris), Trevor Dawsey, Caleb Bourne, Hayden Adkins, Hayly Adkins, Presley Dawsey, Colton Dawsey, Ace Carter, Shelby Carter, Karlee, Kaleb, Samuel, Dawson, Hadley, Brooke, Da'lyn, Haygan, Wyatt and Carter.
Pallbearers were Reginald Crowther, Kenny Holloway, Larry Ratliff, Tommy Graves, Alex Carter and Alan Fortenberry.
