92, Columbia
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Calvary Baptist Church for Sarah Nell Bass Boone, 92, of Columbia, who died on Thursday, April 26, in Columbia. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery in Brookhaven. Bro. Millard Moak officiated at the services. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the services on Saturday, April 28, at Calvary Baptist Church.
She was born June 20, 1925, in Prentiss to Clarence and Etta Delancy Bass. She graduated from Prentiss High School, and upon graduation, she moved to Columbia, where she worked various jobs, including at the funeral home where she would eventually be married. In 1946, she met the love of her life, Thurman Boone Jr. After a brief and love-filled courtship, they were married. They were married 72 years until Mr. Boone’s death in February 2018. The couple had three children, Joel, Don and Dale. The family lived many years in Port Arthur, Texas, before returning to Walthall County in 1963. They then moved to Columbia in 1990 to care for Mr. Boone’s mother. Nell and Thurman Boone were charter members of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, faithful members of Proctor Street Baptist Church in Port Arthur, Texas and Salem Baptist Church in Walthall County. She was always involved in music ministry, youth work and prayer circles, a pillar of whatever church they attended.
She will be remembered as a devoted and fun-loving wife who fully participated with her husband in activities of the Mississippi Chapter of Campers on Missions, Good Sams Club, RV camping and travel. She enjoyed many years living in the county near Sartinville, where she enjoyed growing and canning food, raising donkeys and participating in community and school functions. They restored the 104-year-old Major John Sartin home in Sartinville and enjoyed giving tours and hosting events. Many will remember her as a “prayer warrior” whose faith and gift for sharing her abiding faith touched the lives of many people. Her family cherishes the memory of her wonderfully prepared meals, especially her famous lemon icebox pies. She loved arranging flowers and provided beautiful arrangements for many weddings and other events.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Thurman Boone Jr.; parents, Clarence and Etta Delancey Bass; one son, Thurman Dale Boone, and two brothers, Clarence Adrian Bass and Thomas H. Bass.
