Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, 2024, at Hathorn Funeral Home for Dorothy “Dot” M. Fortenberry, 88, of Columbia, who passed away on Saturday, Dec. 21, in Hattiesburg. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Dr. Bryant Barnes officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until the time of the services on Friday, Dec. 27, at Hathorn Funeral Home.
She was a beloved educator who dedicated 48 years of her life to teaching students across Louisiana and Mississippi. She kept basketball scores for numerous schools, fostering a love for the game in countless young athletes after retiring. Known for her competitive spirit, she was a celebrated Senior Table Tennis Champion, showcasing her agility and skill on the court. A dedicated member of the Methodist Church and member of the Eastern Star, she actively contributed to her community through charitable endeavors and fellowship. She will be remembered for her zest for life, her active involvement in community events and the positive impact she had on those around her.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Stephanie J. Brown; father, B.F. McKenzie; mother, Mary Letha Welch McKenzie; and sister, Rebecca Kleinke.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Tessa Brown; nephew, Chris Kleinke; niece, Evelyn Kleinke-Prine (Chris); and son-in-law, Russell Brown of Columbia.
Pallbearers were Russell Brown, Chris Prine, Don Brown, Zachary Brown and Jerry Davis. Honorary pallbearer was Grayson McDaniel.
