James “Rem” Rembert Powell
86, Sumrall
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, at Community Baptist Church in Sumrall for James “Rem” Rembert Powell, 86, of Sumrall, who passed from this life on Nov. 9, at his residence. Burial followed in Powell Family Cemetery. Bro. James Sanders, Bro. Mark McNair and Jamie Powell officiated at the service.
He was born on April 19, 1938, the eldest son of Hubert and Ada Powell of Baxterville. He worked in the oil production industry for 32 years for various companies including Big Chief Drilling Company, Pool Offshore Drilling Company, Stanley Drilling Company and Trend Drilling Company. After retiring from the oil production industry, he worked for the Lamar County Road Department for 15 years until he fully retired at the age of 72.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Ada Powell; sisters, Kathryn Anderson and Willie Rayborn; brothers, Hinton Powell and Roy Powell; and infant great grandchild, Dallas Powell.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Woodard Powell of Sumrall; daughters, Jackie Jones (Roger) of Seminary, Reba Coulter (Rick) of Columbia and Debra Lucus (Donald "Pop") of Sumrall; sons, James "Bo" Powell of Sumrall, Richard Powell (Charis) of Lumberton, Robert "Bob" Powell (Christi) of Mt. Olive, Earnest "Frog" Powell (Wanda) of Columbia, Hubert Powell of Sumrall and Doyle Powell of Sumrall; adopted son, Daniel Parente (Tammy) of Columbia; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sister, Ada Smith (Gary) of Alabama; brothers, Billy Powell (Rita) and Quitman Powell (Shannon), both of Lumberton; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers were James "Bo" Powell, Staff Sgt. Richard Powell, Earnest "Frog" Powell, Hubert Powell, Doyle Powell, Charlie Powell and Robert "Bob" Powell as alternate.
Jones and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
