Mattie Nell Hall Wood

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Hathorn Funeral Home for Mattie Nell Hall Wood, 97, of Columbia, who passed from this life into the presence of her Lord, Jesus Christ, on Monday, March 10, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. The family celebrated this occasion knowing that “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Rev. Brian Stewart and Rev. Austin Hoyle officiated at the services. Mark Fite provided special music. The Wood family received friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the services on Friday, March 14, at Hathorn Funeral Home.

She was born on Jan. 12, 1928, in Hopewell, Copiah County, to the late Randolph and Kate Miller Hall. In 1946, she married E. Homer Wood, Sr. from Hazelhurst. They moved to Columbia in 1958, where they lived until 1971, at which time they moved to Waynesboro. There they owned and operated Wood’s Store, Inc., dba Western Auto Associate Store. She was known in Wayne County as being an exceptionally astute businesswoman. She and Homer retired in 1984 and moved to Fairfield Bay, Ark., where they enjoyed 11 years of fun on Greers Ferry Lake and Golf Course. She was the ladies club champion more than once.
Nell and her husband returned to Columbia in 1992, where she continued to enjoy golf and was also an avid bridge player. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church and served the church in several capacities over the years. She also loved her adoring family. She was known for telling funny stories and embraced laughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, E. Homer Wood Sr.; parents, Randolph and Kate Miller Hall; and one son, Dr. Evan “Sonny” H. Wood (Lisa).
Her memory will forever be cherished by her two sons, Robert "Bob" Davis of Carrollton, Texas, and Steve Wood (Alecia) of Waynesboro; one daughter, Kay Wood Newsom (Bob) of Columbia; one brother, Ted Hall (Mary Agnes) of Atlanta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was carried to her final rest by those honored to serve as pallbearers, including Bobby Newsom, Steven Wood, Bobby Shirley, Tyler Wood, Austin Wood and Jason Perry. Honorary pallbearer was Sandy Sanderson.
The family is requesting that any donations in memory of Nell Wood be made to the First United Methodist Church, Columbia, MS.
