A celebration was held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at Hathorn Funeral Home for Rev. George Douglas Brewton Sr., 86, of Columbia, who passed away on Monday, Nov. 27, in Columbia. Burial followed in Foxworth Cemetery. Rev. A.D. Gammill Jr. officiated at the services. Leitha Chapman, Michelle Pittman and Brandy Stringer provided special music. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, at Hathorn Funeral Home.
Born and raised in Columbia, he served his nation faithfully in the United States Navy. Upon his return from active duty, he surrendered his life to Gospel ministry, where he was an ordained minister for over five decades with the Church of God out of Cleveland, Tenn. He left a major impact on countless lives. He pastored several churches primarily in the northern part of the state before moving back to Marion County in 1977. He became the first Chaplain of the Marion and Walthall County jail, where he served faithfully for over 30 years. In addition to his work as a Chaplain, he was an evangelist that filled area pulpits on a regular basis. Those that had known him will always remember his devotion and dedication to the Lord, family and friends alike.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Middleton Brewton; daughter, Tammie Pierce; father, Tommy Brewton: mother, Maude Baggett Anderson; and stepfather, Edwin “Boots” Anderson.
Survivors include his son, George Douglas Brewton Jr. (Patsy) of Columbia; daughter, Yolette Broom of Raceland, La.; brother, James Anderson (Phillis) of Cleveland, Tenn.; two sisters, Doris Geiger of Bassfield and Debra Buchanan of Cleveland, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Haylee Pierce, Shadrach Pierce, Kyla Fortenberry, Laekyn Brewton, all of Columbia and Danyelle Whittington and Tiffany Broom, both of McComb; four great-grandchildren, Noah Pierce and Kais Fortenberry, both of Columbia, and Tristan Whittington and Tryton Whittington, both of McComb; and two sons-In-law, Steve Pierce of Columbia and Robert Broom of McComb.
Pallbearers were John Geiger, Robert Broom, Shadrach Pierce, Steve Pierce and Tristan Whittington.
