Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at Capps Funeral Home in Tylertown for Robert G. Johnson, 92, of Columbia, who died on Wednesday, Aug. 2, peacefully at his residence. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Rev. Dave Nichols officiated at the services. Janiece Baughman performed special music. Visitation was held from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3, at Capps Funeral Home.
He was born Thursday, April 2, 1931, in Tylertown. He was the youngest of 10 children. He was a member of East Columbia Baptist Church. He was the oldest living member and served as a deacon for many years. He had a successful career with Farm Bureau for over 30 years. He was an avid fisherman, but his most treasured role was as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Robert “Bob" Johnson Jr. and Johnny Joe Johnson; father, Robert "Bob" Johnson; mother, Flora Crawford Lazarus; and nine siblings.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Eleanor Blackwell Johnson; son, James "Jimmy" Johnson (Kem); daughter, Kathy Johnson Stringer (John); grandchildren, Jennifer McClendon, Scott Johnson, Paige Smith, Robert "Trey" Johnson III, Heather Bailey and Evan Stringer; 10 great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, friends and loving family.
Pallbearers were Scott Johnson, Evan Stringer, Robert E Johnson IV, Johnnie Ray Copeland, Chad Blackwell and Rudolph Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Ben Bennett and James Johnson.
The Johnson family would like to say a special thank you to St. Luke Home Health and Hospice and son of the heart Johnnie Copeland for all the love and care that was given to Mr. Robert and family.
