Timothy Paul Lee
69, Columbia
A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Paul B. Johnson State Park in Hattiesburg for Timothy Paul Lee, 69, of Columbia, who passed away on Monday, March 4, while surrounded by his family.
He was born in Fairhope, Ala., to Rev. Dr. George F. Lee Sr. and Margaret Lee. He grew up in Columbia. After receiving his master’s degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he began a career dedicated to child advocacy and social justice.
In his professional career and in his personal life, he was a true servant of God and of the neighbor. Whether repairing roofs, providing food for the homeless or donating shoes off his very feet, he never hesitated to help a person in need. He was the Founder and Executive Director of the Pocono Mountain Center in Tobyhanna, Pa., where he strived to uplift children, families and communities. He was named 2017 Humanitarian of the Year, “Champion for Children” by the Monroe County Association for the Education of Young Children and was recognized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for his years of distinguished service to Pocono Services for Families and Children.
In the recent years after his retirement, he moved back to Columbia. As a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and “Poppy,” he centered his life around his family, supporting loved ones during health challenges and spending as much time as possible in the outdoors. His greatest joys were camping and hiking with his beloved wife, Kathy S. Lee, and spending time with his family. He loved cheering on his granddaughters as they performed in their favorite activities, whether on a stage or on a horse.
He was known for his sweet tooth and would never pass up a s’more, peanut butter parfait or slice of turtle pie. He was hilarious and his ever-present sense of humor often brought joy and laughter even during difficult times.
Tim believed whole-heartedly in each person’s intrinsic ability to succeed and serve, no matter the obstacles in their path. He inspired many to contribute to the world as he did and made everyone that he encountered feel appreciated and loved.
Above all, he was a persistent optimist. As his family cares for each other and grieves this tragic loss, they are reminded of his often repeated saying: “It will all be good.”
He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Dr. George F. Lee Sr.
Survivors include his mother, Margaret Lee of Columbia; cherished wife of 47 years, Kathy S. Lee of Columbia; son, Joshua Lee of Columbia; daughter, Abbey Nash (Scott) of Bryn Athyn, Pa.; two brothers, Fred Lee (Ruth) of Knoxville, Tenn., and Rob Lee (Shelley) of Sumrall; one sister, Lisa Lee Mistich of Columbia; two granddaughters, Caitlyn and Charlotte Nash, both of Bryn Athyn, Pa.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
