A young girl exclaimed upon walking onto Main Street just before Columbia’s Christmas parade, “This is a fancy town!”
Indeed.
The city put on its best for residents and visitors Friday night.
Lots of children scrambled to grab candy thrown from the parade. Churches and community organizations designed a lot of great floats around a superhero theme and bands marched while playing yuletide tunes.
The lights downtown set the mood, from white ones lining the tops of all the buildings to the new Christmas tree made of lights on the courthouse lawn.
And the weather was perfect: Cool enough to make you feel like it was almost Christmas but not cold enough to make you want to leave early, and there was not a hint of rain.
A thank you is owed to the Kiwanis Club for organizing the annual event. It’s a lot of work to put together something of that magnitude, and there are always going to be critics who complain about whatever is done. City crews also did a great job cleaning up before the event.
Columbia made a good impression as it ushered in the yuletide season.
