It’s never easy to win a state championship in high school sports, but it’s perhaps even more difficult when you are the favorite throughout the season. In that case, every team you play is gunning for you, hoping to be the one to take down the giant.
That was what the Columbia Academy boys basketball team faced in the 2019-2020 season, but the Cougars handled it with seeming ease.
Head coach Dale Watts, a legend in this state’s prep sports world, knows how to get the maximum of out his teams, and this squad delivered, cheered on by a large and passionate group of supporters.
In the 3A MAIS state final last week, they manhandled a very strong Carroll Academy team, winning by double digits without even making a three-pointer.
Congratulations to the players for their achievements that they’ll remember for a lifetime.
Also, look for a special section that the C-P is producing, which will be published March 12.
Making these sections is one of the most fun things we get to do as journalists, and we hope it’s a worthy product to commemorate what the Cougars accomplished this season.
