One of the principle issues of our day is school shootings. Even those who have never been terrorized by a mass murderer have to prepare safety precautions in case it does happen.
And that can create an environment in schools where students are locked in and the community is shut out, which isn’t a good way to have a successful education system but is a sad by-product of our violent society.
But when we adults get discouraged about the world we live in, often young people can lift our spirits. Such is the case with the members of the SAVE Club and Paw Print newspaper staff at Columbia High School. They produced a video showing the effects of kindness in a modern school with all the problems students face. It won a national award last week from Sandy Hook Promise, an organization formed after the deadly 2012 school shooting in Connecticut.
We share the thoughts of Marion County Supervisor Terry Broome, who said at the ceremony last week, “You just don’t know how proud that makes me to know that we have these kind of young people in our community.”
