Dear Editor,
In the July 9 issue of The Columbian-Progress, Danielle Barber at Columbia Animal Rescue asked for help with building repairs from county supervisors (“Animal shelter repairs again debated”). I feel if the rescue center will take county strays then the county should share expenses. I believe my family pays enough tax to share for such an important part of our community. This center should be a “county operation” with the whole county involved.
In Genesis 2:19, God formed the animals and brought them for Adam to name. He gave man dominion over them; not to “shoot them” or “throw them out” when you get bored. But to care for them.
As for being “out of the dog business,” none of us are. Until puppy mills are closed, spay and neuter clinics are made affordable and breeding is limited, we will all continue to care for poor animals that owners dispose of like trash on the side of the road.
Age and poor health hinder me from volunteering physically at the shelter. I will, however, offer to answer their phones from my home or make calls.
When man fails to care for the animal kingdom, we fail as mankind.
