One way to generate more money into our state economy is by cleaning out the state treasurer account owed to the people or their families. I’m not talking about this half-hearted effort that has been going on for years. A good hired computer programmer (if not already on board) could have “sorted” the computer file by state, by city, then street address, then name.
The last printout of this file released to state newspapers was a disgrace to common intelligence, especially in our so-called savvy electronic age. Maybe this is the reason why state law was not followed to release another printout.
Also, locally, I cannot understand why the duplication of garbage bills cannot be fixed.

Editor’s Note: State Treasurer Lynn Fitch has been obstinate about the legally mandated newspaper publication of the money owed to citizens. But she is not seeking that office again, and David McRae, one of two Republican candidates running for treasurer, assured us during a visit to Columbia this week that he will respect the law and publish the information if elected. We trust he would do it in a proper format that provides value to readers.
