In Thursday’s paper there is a column regarding whether to allow alcohol sales or not on Sundays here in Marion County (“Yes to ice cream, no to Sunday alcohol,” by Charlie Smith).
I completely disagree with the reasoning given comparing a one day ban of alcohol to the multi-year ban on alcohol during Prohibition.
Currently the one day ban in Marion County doesn’t do anything listed because it is just that — a one-day ban. All that happens here locally is clerks at our local grocery stores and gas stations have to carry back and restock beer because customers forgot what day it was and people who live here and in surrounding areas drive to Hattiesburg or McComb to eat at the bigger chain restaurants who do not have weird hours and serving the same thing on a buffet week in and week out.
By lifting the ban on Sunday sales, it will be another shot in the arm to our local economy because we can get businesses such as Chili’s, TGI Fridays and other chains to come in.
This revenue will trickle down to our schools and give our younger people another option to work at rather than picking if they want to work the drive thru at one of the 10 fast food joints in town.
