Accelerated Reader (AR) is an educational, digital program that benefits students and teachers by tracking independent reading practice. In order to use this program, students need reading levels or ranges which are created by using a universal screener for reading. For example, a 3.0 to 3.9 is a 3rd grade range, which is important so that books chosen to read are not too easy nor too hard. AR is crucial to students and it improves reading skills by recognizing what students can do and how they can improve. AR can develop many skills like comprehension, imagery, prior knowledge, inferencing, and more. AR can also benefit kids outside of the library because the further you read, the more advanced your skills become. Our librarian, Mrs Turnage, likes AR to help assure students are reading books they can understand and it can assist in helping students become superior readers. Currently the top five readers are Ella O'neill with 157.8 points, Jaxen Ball with 124.3 points, third place is Aaron Fang with 123.3 points, fourth place is Jaydin Holmes with 114.1 points, and finally Jy’Davin Riggins with 113.2 points. There are prizes and awards that Mrs. Turnage hands out to those who earn different point values like pencils, colorful erasers, and snacks. She recently awarded students with special cupcakes for reaching their goals. At the end of the year, top AR prizes will also earn awards.
