The Floree C. Smith Legacy Scholarship honors the late Floree Smith, a lifetime civil rights activist of Marion County and retired Head Start teacher. Myron McGowan, a former student, now living in Jackson, Miss. as a visual artist and teacher, created this scholarship as a tribute recognizing her tireless fight for justice, equality and educational growth for the people of Marion County and South Mississippi. Financial funding was fully seeded by Pierrel Foxworth, also a former student, now living in Newnan, Ga. as a successful business professional, along with his wife, Jannet Foxworth. The fifth annual scholarship of 2024 went to Raelyn Powell of Columbia High School. She plans to attend The University of Southern Mississippi in the fall as a political science major.
