The Marion County Sheriff's Office made a large methamphetamine bust Tuesday afternoon that resulted in a man being charged with armed trafficking.
While on patrol Tuesday in the Improve community, Deputy Jonathan Dillard initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Mississippi 44 and Hutson Morris Road and made contact with the driver, who was later identified as Robert Leggett, 71, of Seminary.
Through the course of the investigation, Leggett was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and a firearm on his person and was placed into custody. Due to the narcotics being found on Leggett’s person, Dillard conducted a vehicle search.
While searching the vehicle, Dillard found a plastic bag in the center console containing 149.96 grams of methamphetamine. That is the equivalent of more than five ounces of methamphetamine.
“It’s not too often we come in contact with this much,” Capt. Pete Williams said. “Occasionally, we’ll get into the 100-gram range. This is just good, proactive police work by Deputy Dillard.”
Leggett is currently in custody at the Marion County Regional Correctional Facility on an $80,000 bond for armed trafficking and enhanced penalty of possession of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm.
