Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at Gates Road Baptist Church for George L. Sanford, 80, of Columbia, who died on Friday, March 16, at his residence. Burial followed in Gates Road Cemetery. Elder Roger Hickman and Bro. Yancy Magee officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, at Hathorn Funeral Home.
As a long-time resident of Marion County, he worked in many different places, doing many different things. He spent the most time with Texaco Trading and Transportation as a truck driver. He also worked as a diesel mechanic, and when not out working, he could always be found in the hay fields! He faithfully served our nation as a member of the United States Army National Guard. He was a loving husband and father and a faithful member of Gates Road Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Columbus and Bessie Smith Sanford; brother, Jack Sanford; sister, Balzie Cavanaugh, and son-in-law, Reggie Broom.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 60 years, Sylvia Prine Sanford of Columbia; daughter, Kim Broom of Columbia; three sisters, Bobbie Nell Lowery (Buddy) of Columbia, Christine Gipson of Bassfield and Patsy Ruth Broom (Nathan) of Columbia; three brothers, Nathan Sanford (Joyce) of San Jose, Calif., Johnny Sanford (Kathryn) of Sumrall and C.C. Sanford of Columbia; one niece, Melissa Miller of Oxford, and a host of other family and friends.
Pallbearers were Larry Peavy, James Cavanaugh, James Broom, Kerry Walker, Byron Sanford and Dewayne Broom. Honorary pallbearers were Melvin Jones and Bobby White.
