Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at New Union Baptist Church for James C. Abston, 82, of Columbia, who died on Saturday, Oct. 14, at his residence. Interment followed in New Union Cemetery. The Rev. Darren Webb and the Rev. Steve Ellis officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, at New Union Baptist Church.
A native of Gilbertown, Ala., he retired from Exxon Oil as a field technician and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Coy and Lavada Abston, and sister, Melba Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Maurice Douglas Abston of Columbia; two daughters, Virginia Sue Rutland (Howard) of Columbia and Kathy Abston-Brooks (Marc) of Dewy-Rose, Ga.; three sons, James Thomas Abston of Flomaton, Ala., Brian Thomas Abston (Danielle) of Brewton, Ala. and Nelson Rutland (Debbie) of Sumrall; three sisters, Ruth Merchant of Chunchula, Ala., Sybil Beard of Gilbertown and Tommie Jean Brown (Jimmy) of Tillman’s Corner, Ala.; two brothers, Don Abston (Bessie) of Chunchula and Ted Abston (Candice) of Saraland, Ala.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
