Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, in the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel for J.W. Hartfield, 94, of Columbia, who died on Friday, July 28. Interment followed in Foxworth Cemetery. Pastor Cory Odom, the Rev. A.G. Gammill and the Rev. Randy Davis officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, July 31, at Colonial Funeral Home.
He was born on June 22, 1923, in Lamar County. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was stationed in New Orleans. protecting the Louisiana coast. After his time was served in the U.S. Coast Guard, he returned to Columbia and made it his home until he passed. He retired from Brown & Root as a crane operator at the age of 62. He was a member of Morgantown Church of God. He loved his church and was a very faithful member until he was housebound several years ago.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Hartfield; grandson, Chad Powell; mother, Pearl Chappell Tyrone; dad, Guy Hartfield and brothers, Leo Hartfield and Robert Knapp.
Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Arthur Mae Conerly Hartfield of Columbia; daughter, Martha Hartfield Powell (Winford) of Brandon and Foxworth; son, Jackie Hartfield of Columbia; daughter-in-love, Sondra Loftin Hartfield of Thomas Station, Tenn.; sister, Sue Hilliard of Cleveland, Okla.; brother, James Hartfield of Sumrall; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Greg Powell, Logan Powell, Paxton Powel, Zane Hartfield, Jason Hartfield, Kyle Hartfield, Roman Malone and Stephen Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Lee Forbes, Kelly Harmon, Cornell Malone, Gerald Melton, Harlon Peak, Willard Powell and Ricky Smith.
