The Columbia Duckworth 8u all-stars bounced back from a tough loss Saturday night to capture the District II state title Sunday at Tatum Park in Hattiesburg.
Duckworth began the tournament with a 12-4 over Taylorsville Friday night and continued through the winners’ bracket Saturday. The all-stars disposed of Mendenhall 12-4 before squaring off in a hard-fought game against Hackley. After six innings the score was knotted at 15-15, and Duckworth rallied to win 16-15 in extras. However, fatigue set in for the third game of the day as Duckworth fell 23-9 to Taylorsville.
Duckworth rebounded from the tough loss to get revenge in the championship Sunday, downing Taylorsville 14-8 to raise the trophy.
“We are so proud of these boys and are thankful for the coaches’ dedication, hard work, courage and relentless time they showed to the 8u boys,” Rolanda Swarptue said.
Duckworth will head to Ruston, La., July 26 through July 28 for the Invitational World Series.
Swarptue added the Duckworth squad is thankful for the Columbia Dean Griner coaches, players and fans for their support.
