Jacksonville Jaguars second-year punter Logan Cooke will be hosting a one-day camp June 29 at his alma mater, Columbia Academy.
The camp at James E. Pope Field begins at 9 a.m. and runs until noon, with free lunch included. Interested parties need to pre-register at universe.com/logancookefootballcamp, and check in will begin at 8 a.m.
Cooke said the main reason he wanted to host a camp in his hometown is to let Columbia children have the experience of working with an NFL player and to show the community he will always be around.
“I know when I was a kid if there would have been an NFL player from Columbia put on a camp, I’d probably be head over heels for it,” he said. “It’s a way to give back and to show Columbia I’m still thinking about them.”
The camp is open to youth ages 9 to 14, and participants will engage in non-contact football drills.
Cooke said it will mainly be a skills camp with competitive 7-on-7 scrimmages at the end.
“It’s mostly just running through all the drills that happen within a football play, and kids will get to experience every aspect of it,” he said. “There’s been a lot of people say, ‘My son isn’t interested in kicking, but he might want to come.’ I don’t even think we’ll kick any balls; it’s not a kicking camp. We’ll have things that cover all aspects of the game.”
While nothing is set in stone at this point, Cooke said there have been multiple Columbia Academy and Columbia High School graduates that have reached out and offered their help for the camp.
Cooke said he wants to give participants the opportunity to be active during the summer and learn more about the game while having fun.
“Also I’m going to be out there playing with them, too, so they’ll get to run around and play with me and just have a good time,” he said.
