Columbia High School’s Aiden Singley will get the chance to continue his baseball career in college after signing with Copiah-Lincoln Community College Friday morning.
The senior said to sign to play collegiate baseball means everything to him.
“I’ve been wanting to do this ever since I was a little boy, and it’s a dream come true,” he said.
The shortstop and pitcher for the Wildcats said the plan is for him to continue with both positions for the Wolves.
“I want to start as a freshman, play the infield, pitch a little bit and just ball out,” he said.
Columbia head coach Kyle Lindsey said he’s proud of Singley for achieving his goal of playing in college.
“Any time you see a kid reach a goal it’s something special,” he said. “He’s one of our leaders on our team, plays right there at shortstop and does a lot for us on the mound. He’s basically our quarterback out there on the field.”
Lindsey added Singley’s versatility is what will drive his value at the JUCO level.
“He can play any infield position, either second, third or shortstop, and he has really good hands. He’s got some arm strength and is pretty accurate with it across the infield,” he said. “He also has a chance to be a quality bullpen arm. He throws three pitches for strikes, and they’re all quality pitches. You know you have a guy that is going to come in and pump strikes for you, and that’s huge in those middle innings.”
Singley said he really liked the coaches and the environment at Co-Lin and that the Wesson college felt like home to him.
“I had some other (schools) interested, but Co-Lin just felt like the right choice for me with everything.”
Singley thanked his parents, Justin and Heather Singley, and his coaches for helping him reach the next level and said he’s very appreciative of everything they’ve done.
Singley batted .408 with one homer and 14 RBI last year and was one of Columbia’s top arms on the mound. He went 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA and struck out 37 in 31 2/3 innings.
Co-Lin went 21-20 last season and 12-16 in Region 23 play.
