The Columbia 10u softball all-stars continued their dominance in Magee this past weekend and claimed the USSSA state title Sunday.
Columbia beat Sumrall 8-3 in the championship game Sunday night, and head coach Kyle Wilks said he was proud of how his team handled adversity.
“It was a lot of fun. They played real well all weekend and really played some good teams. They battled through the heat and did really well,” he said. “We went 6-0, scored 53 and only gave up 13 runs.”
The all-stars beat Carthage 11-3 Friday night, Oak Grove 16-0 and Magee 8-3 Saturday and Northwest Rankin 6-1 and Petal 4-3 Sunday before the championship.
Through 13 games this summer, Columbia is undefeated and has outscored opponents 115-22. Wilks said the biggest strength Columbia has is it has six pitchers and isn’t relying on just one or two girls.
“That says a lot about our league and our parents that are taking the time out to work with our kids individually to get them to this point to where we are deep in pitching. That’s the big thing in 10u. You have to have girls who can pitch and throw strikes,” he said. “The other thing we did is hit the ball well. It didn’t matter if the girl was throwing really hard or the girl was throwing a lot of off-speed stuff.”
The all-star squad will play in the USSSA Southern Nationals July 19 through July 21 in Picayune and will compete against teams from Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and likely Florida.
