The Columbia 8u softball all-stars had a successful run this summer, but it came to an end Sunday at the state tournament in Mendenhall.
Magee proved to be their nemesis as they dropped two games to the squad from Simpson County.
“They’ve got a good team. In both teams that we played them we didn’t play really well. We just couldn’t get it done offensively,” head coach Kyle Wilks said.
The Columbia team opened play Friday, losing to Magee 12-11. They bounced back with a 20-1 win over Pontotoc Saturday night and a 13-3 victory over Cleveland Sunday afternoon.
That set up another matchup with Magee, but the Columbia girls fell 7-2.
Wilks said he felt like hitting was their strength coming in and that they hit well at times but couldn’t put big innings together.
But overall he said they had a great summer.
“The girls played in several tournaments and won a lot. Wish we could have finished a little better in the state tournament, but we did have a good year. Had a great group of girls,” he said.
About seven or eight of the young athletes will move up to 10u, where it is kid-pitch rather than coach-pitch, while the rest will remain to compete for another 8u state championship next season.
