Although the Columbia Academy Lady Cougars dropped their regular season finale, they are slated to begin the south state tournament Saturday.
The Lady Cougars (13-18), who are District 4’s No. 4 seed, will take on District 3 No. 1 seed Clinton Christian in the first round Saturday morning at 9. Riverfield Academy is the host school, but the tournament is actually being played at Louisiana-Monroe.
“Clinton Christian has a really good pitcher that I think is committed to Jones so it’s going to be a battle against her,” CA head coach Kyle Wilks said. “We just need to take some good swings and not swing at too many bad pitches. Then we have to pitch well and limit the amount of free bases with walks or errors and make the routine plays that come to us. Then we need to be able to get that big hit when we have runners in scoring position.”
It’s a double-elimination style tournament, and CA will play either Amite School Center or Tri-County Academy in the second round. With a win over Clinton Christian, the Lady Cougars would play at 1 p.m. and with a loss they would play at 11 a.m. in the losers’ bracket. The championship will be at 2 Monday afternoon, and a potential Game 2 would be at 4.
“I hope we can get down there and put a couple good games together, win a couple games and make a little run at it,” Wilks said.
The Lady Cougars ended their regular season Tuesday in a 10-2 loss to Simpson Academy after falling behind 5-0 after an inning and a half.
