Columbia High School baseball standout Trey Hobgood plans to continue his baseball career in college.
Last Friday, in front of family and teammates, the senior third baseman, first baseman and right-handed pitcher inked a scholarship offer to play for Pearl River Community College.
As a junior in 25 games last season, Hobgood hit .342, smashing 25 hits and knocking in 19. He scored 10 runs and had an on base percentage of .467. Hobgood shined during the State Games of Mississippi, which was a great opportunity to play in front of college scouts, connecting for a home run, a triple and drew several walks during the three-game stint in June.
Hobgood said he is excited to become a PRCC Wildcat once his senior season at CHS is complete.
“I’m really grateful for the opportunity that I have,” he said. “I’m excited to finish out my career here and glad to be able to go to the next level. The visit to Pearl River really made my mind up for me. I like the coaching staff that they have there.”
CHS baseball coach Greg Owen said he is proud of Hobgood and the legacy that he helps continue in Columbia.
“The most exciting thing here is that Trey gets to carry on a tradition that we’ve been really proud of for 15 years now,” Owen said. “In the past 15 years, we’ve have put 35 players into college baseball or pro baseball. So we’re really proud.”
Owen said PRCC sees Hobgood as a good fit for the program.
“Anytime you’re signing a scholarship, it’s a lot like a marriage,” he said. “It has to be something that’s right for the player and for the team that he’s going to. I think Trey is going to fit in well there and they are going to be pleased with the kind of player and the kind of person that they get.”
Owen said Hobgood has been and will be a valuable part of the CHS Wildcats lineup this spring.
“There are only a handful of players throughout my time that beat me to the field on some occasions,” he said. “Trey is one of those guys. He wants to be there early. He wants to get his extra reps in. Now, he’s reaping the benefits of that. We talk a lot about investing and spending; he invests a lot of time so that he can spend later.”
