The ninth annual Running with Caleb 5K will be Saturday morning and begins at City Park.
When the event began, the goal was to make sure Coleman’s prowess as a runner was remembered for years to come after the Columbia Academy student was killed in a car crash in 2011, but it has evolved into a successful scholarship foundation. By the end of this year, Columbia Academy students will have received more than $20,000 in scholarships in Coleman’s name, according to organizer Brandi Perry.
The scholarship is voted on by Cougar coaches and staff members, and Perry said it’s an honor to be able to help students realize their dreams through scholarships.
“We get thank you cards and still hear from kids years and years after they’ve gotten their scholarship,” Perry said. “We know how much it means to them.”
The race Saturday will go through downtown before continuing on Lafayette Street, High School Avenue, Church Street and White Street before finishing back at the park.
It begins at 8 a.m. Runners can register at raceroster.com, by contacting Perry at (601) 731-4383 or the day of the race between 7 a.m. and 7:30. Perry said as of deadline Tuesday there were more than 75 runners signed up.
“We know it’s going to be a beautiful day and a wonderful day, and we invite all ages to come out and participate,” she said.
