The 6u Sweetees softball squad is heading to the Lawrence County Sports Complex in Monticello this weekend to play in the X-Play State Tournament and is ready to put up a fight.
“I hope they go out there and give it their all. That’s all we can ask of them, and I think they will,” head coach Devin Boyd said.
The all-star squad has had limited experience together playing as a group for the first time but have yielded better results each time out.
“The first tournament we played in Sumrall we had only had three practices together, so I thought we fared pretty well. Then we played in Magee and came in third, so we just keep improving with every tournament we play in,” Boyd said.
While the Sweetees have already made continuous improvement, there is still more to be made.
“We have to work with our pitchers making the throw to first and just the mental errors we make,” Boyd said. “We need to get our base running going. Our bats have been performing pretty well. They were down a little bit to begin with, but once we get our bats going I think we’re going to do really well.”
The Columbia 6u softball team will play Lawrence County Friday night at 8 and would play either West Jasper or Sumrall Saturday morning at 11:30 with a win Friday but a loss would keep them from the field until 3:30 Saturday afternoon.
“I’m really looking forward to state and believe we’re going to do well,” Boyd said.
