Marion County was well represented on the Meridian Community College diamond at the State Games last week.
Columbia Academy outfielders Slade Wilks and Drew Havard joined West Marion starting pitcher Shelby Terrell on the District 7 team, which played three games in three days.
“It was fun just going out playing with some of the best guys around,” Terrell said. “There’s a lot of talent on your team, and you face a lot of talent. It was fun meeting new people and getting to know everybody.”
Last year at the State Games, Terrell was joined by fellow Trojans pitcher Trace McNabb, who has since graduated, and said it was an honor to be the lone West Marion representative this time around.
“It feels good to be able to represent West Marion like that and go out there, show what I’ve got and represent where I come from,” he said.
Terrell pitched five innings in District 7’s 5-3 loss to District 5 on July 12 and settled in after a slow start.
“I feel like I did OK,” he said. “I started off pretty bad, but as the game as went on I started to do really good.”
District 7 beat District 3 12-2 July 13 but lost the following day to District 5 11-3.
Wilks suffered a minor injury in his first at-bat and was held out of competition the remainder of the tournament as a precaution. Official stats were not available by deadline Tuesday.
