West cheer program looks to expand

By SUSAN AMUNDSON,

West Marion High School Trojan Cheerleaders are setting goals to be accomplished this year. Coaches Rhonda Polk and Makayla McNease say they want to expand their cheer program to include more competitions and higher levels of difficulty in their routines and performances.

Polk and McNease said West Marion’s varsity and junior varsity teams will be competing in the Game Day Event at the Mississippi High School Athletic Association’s State Cheer Competition in December.

They’ll also do a competition in the spring.

The girls had a taste of competing last year when they went to a Deep South Competition in Jackson, where they won Grand Champion in the Game Day Event.

“We’re looking forward to a bigger and better year with two great groups of cheerleaders,” Polk said.
