Sportsplex study gains approval

Columbia aldermen voted 4-1 in a special meeting this week to do an environmental study regarding a sportsplex on R.A. Johnson Drive.

Dungan Engineering will prepare the study at a cost of $17,500.

County plans property tax increase

The Marion County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 Thursday to advertise a 4.4-mill increase in the property tax rate.

The public has an opportunity to offer their opinions at a hearing at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 before supervisors take a vote on final adoption of the 2019-2020 budget.

Fees rise to $25 for background checks, other services

Local AT&T workers strike

The Communications Workers of America’s strike with AT&T is affecting the entire Southeastern portion of the country, including Marion County.

Union members have been protesting this week outside the AT&T building at the corner of Church Street and High School Avenue.
